Our Favourite Explain IA Entries

by Gene Smith
February 19, 2010 |

Over the past month the IA Institute ran an amazing contest called Explain IA. Entrants were asked to use words, pictures, diagrams or video to explain information architecture. There were more than 100 high-quality entires.

But some of the entries really struck a chord with our team, so I thought I'd share a few of our favourites. (We're a sponsor of the contest, by the way, and we also made a video submission.)

Heather liked "Disorder Happens":

Disorder Happens

Scott liked this Scrabble explanation:

What is Information Architecture?

Matt say this image "is really about what Information Architecture is, rather than what an Information Architect might do":

IA gives information form

Scott, Ammneh and I enjoyed "IAs are like Robin Hood":

Several people liked this entry created by Scott's son:

My son's take on ExplainIA

Ammneh and I thought this diagram, created by Murray Thompson, was clear and complete:

ExplainIA

But the all-around favourite in our office was "A Dinosaur Family Explains Information Architecture." Funny and full of inside jokes:
