Jess and I will be doing this workshop on workshops at the IA Summit pre conference this year. Although we have been using this method for quite some time now, the idea came to me during CanUX 2006, when one of the attendees asked about how to communicate the value of user centered design to his internal clients.
I thought about the Accelerator Workshop at that time, because the ROI problem is often rooted in an organization or team's alignment issues. Once the opportunity to align the team or project has passed, it is difficult to back track on these issues--making the project heavy, bloated, and difficult to move ahead. This workshop aims to help those who desperately need to align their teams and efforts--starting with drafting mission/vision statements, through the rest of discovery, design, and build.
The Accelerator Workshop is aimed at those who are challenged by time--and who isn't?
For clients or team who do not want to commit to weeks or months of meeting after meeting, here is a painless and even fun solution to get everyone on board and moving.
(The person who brought up the ROI issue at CanUX also gave me another idea for a talk--Becoming a Usability Coach: Proving Success One Champion at a Time. That talk will be at the UPA conference in June. More to come later.)
